Environmental impact and management of phosphogypsum …

The production of phosphoric acid from natural phosphate rock by means of the wet process gives rise to an industrial by-product named phosphogypsum (PG). About 5 tonnes of PG are generated per tonne of phosphoric acid production, and worldwide PG generation is estimated to be around 100-280 Mt per year. Most of this by-product is

There are currently about 1 billion tons of phosphogypsum stacked in 24 stacks in Florida and about 30 million new tons are generated each year. Other areas of the world, however, looked at phosphogypsum as a valuable raw material and developed processes to use it in chemical manufacture and construction materials.

composition of phospho-gypsum sand waste is presented in Table 3. Particle size distribution of waste is shown in Figure 2. The moisture content of the "as-received" phospho-gypsum sand w&te was 12.3 wt%. The phospho-gypsum sand waste was then dried by heating overnight in a convection oven at 1 1 OOC, prior to encapsulation in SPC.

TENORM: Fertilizer and Fertilizer Production Wastes | US EPA

 · Phosphogypsum has little market value and is transferred as a slurry to waste piles called phosphogypsum stacks. The solid portion of the slurry consolidates while the water pools on the stack''s surface. Eventually gypsum is dredged from the pools to build up the edges around the stack forming a reservoir for storing process water.

Environmental Benefits

In all countries gypsum is used as a clay breaker to enhance the yield of farming land. Many millions of tonnes of flue gas gypsum and phospho gypsum are produced annually as by-products of coal fired power stations and chemical fertilizer industries and in many cases this waste is itself becoming an environmental problem.

India

India produces significant amounts of fertilizer for worldwide use but in doing so creates phospho-gypsum as a by-product in the order of millions of tonnes annually. Presently there is 31 million tonnes of excess phospho gypsum stockpiled and this is added to annually by 2.5 million tonnes.
